We just finished week three of the whole30 which means we are officially in the home stretch!! I'm pretty surprised to be honest. Although I have successfully completed one whole30 before, Matt has never done a full one. And we've attempted many, many times but always quit after four or five days because of the work and expense. So I am so super proud of us for even making it this far!
The change hasn't been as drastic this time around, I think because we were already eating pretty clean beforehand. We do eat out a fair amount, but dairy and bread and that sort of thing is not part of our regular daily diet, the way it was before my first whole30. I have noticed my skin looks a little clearer, and Matt has noticed more energy first thing in the morning as well as sustained energy throughout the day.
A note for breastfeeding mamas: I do think my milk supply dipped a bit the first two weeks. At first I didn't notice anything different, but then in the middle of last week my supply definitely increased again (back to what it was pre-whole30) and so by comparison, I think it must have dropped those first two weeks when my body was re-learning how to use fat instead of sugar for energy. And now looking back, I was really sore those first two weeks, which hasn't happened since the early days, and I think it's because Xavier was having to work extra hard to get what he needed. But, he survived and didn't seem too worse for the wear, even if he was getting less than normal, and now things are totally back to normal. So bottom line: I think it's totally doable to do a whole30 while nursing. I know the official whole30 rules say no snacking, but when you're eating for two, I think it's important to eat whenever you're hungry. Breastfeeding makes me hungry all the time because my body is constantly burning calories, so I eat a lot of snacks (fruit, nuts, larabars) to keep up. And I think that's totally okay!
I'm getting kind of tired of our same few meals, so I'm excited to switch things up a bit this week. I'm going to try roasting brussels sprouts and we're trying cauliflower rice for the first time! Any favorite whole30 recipes we should try this week? I'm feeling adventurous!
Here were our dinners during week three:
- Monday: pecan crusted salmon with thai pumpkin soup and broccoli
- Tuesday: leftovers
- Wednesday: buffalo chicken salad
- Thursday: zoodles with dairy-free pesto, shrimp, prosciutto and peas
- Friday: t-bone steaks, fries and sauteed zucchini
And that's that! If you're interested in more whole30 tips + meal ideas, my sweet friend Emily is also doing a whole30 right now and sharing her meals! She's a kitchen genius and her recommendations are spot-on! As always, thanks for stopping by and pop any questions in the comments! xo!
